Environmental Engineering Program (EnvE) has its origin from a school of engineering called Technische Hogeschool Bandoeng (THS) which was established on July 3, 1920. As the demand on sanitary engineers increased, Sanitary Engineering Department was founded on October 10, 1962, under the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning. The growth of industries and urban infrastructure development had urged the need of environmental quality improvement. In 1982, the Government of Indonesia enacted the Law of Principal Rule of Environment Management. These challenges highlight the need to broaden the scope of sanitary engineering to not only dealing with human health, but also with protecting the environment from pollution. On January 5, 1984 the name of Sanitary Engineering was changed to Environmental Engineering by the decree of Directorate General of Higher Education, Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture Number 119/DIKTI/Kep/1984. Starting from a program that only offerred one undergraduate program, in 1962, it is now an institution of higher education that offers five undergraduate and graduate programs.
Environmental Engineering Study Program of ITB is an higher education institution and a center for the development of science and technology that has a competitive and reliable advantage and is dignified in the field of engineering and management, particularly in residential, urban and rural environments, industry, mining, oil and gas, and natural environments related with the built environment. Our graduates are expected to: (1) have basic knowledge and problem solving skills in the field of Environmental Engineering; (2) be able to apply the science of Environmental Engineering and be able to deal with the latest changes & developments in their fields; and (3) have sense of social sensitivity – nationality & sensitivity of environment in general.
International Class
Starting in 2019, Environmental Engineering ITB opens an International Class Program. We offer a full English 4 years bachelor program with high international exposure. Students have opportunities for interacting with international academia and participating in students exchange program.
As one of ITB goals to become World Class University (WCU), a new program was created to elevate in these ever-changing world so, therefore, internationalization was needed due to reach those certain goals. In one of ITB (statuta) there’s said in order to make a better higher education and as a purpose for ITB is to elevate, develop, and spread the knowledge, technology, art, social study, and human social to make a better generation in line with society in Indonesia that are dynamics and also with more global society around the world. With still holding on to humanity, social, and environmental values through the activity written in Tridharma. The arrangement of this new program aligns with values and one of the support from ITB to make a better set of graduates in the generation for solving a problem and issues around environmental, local, national and even international scale. So on 19 August 2019, the first batch of the International class was made and started their study as a leading one.
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING FIELDS
Environmental infrastructure engineering graduates have career prospects in various fields including government agencies such as at Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Public Works and Housing, state-owned enterprises, professional services such as consultant, contractor, or at academic fields such as lecturers, researchers, and many more.
Students Outcome
The foundation of graduates outcomes of Environmental Engineering Program are reviewed based on the 2017 curriculum evaluation document and reviews of ABET Student Outcome. TL Student Outcome formula is elaborated as follows:
a. Have the ability to identify, formulate, and solve environmental problems by applying the principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
b. Have the ability to apply analysis and synthesis in producing engineering designs in environmental conservation by considering public health, safety and welfare as well as global, cultural, social, environmental and economic factors.
c. Have the ability to communicate effectively with various people regarding the problem of water, water, and soil environment also the technology that is needed in order to solve it.
d. Have the ability to apply ethical and professional responsibilities through consideration of environmental degradation issues and the impact of a technology on the environment locally, regionally, and globally including social and economic aspects.
e. Have the ability to work effectively as a team by prioritizing leadership to create collaborative and comprehensive conditions in setting goals, objectives, and plans needed in managing the environment for reducing degradation and enhancing conservation.
f. Have the ability to identify problems, develop and conduct experiments, analyze, and interpret data, and use judgment to draw conclusions in the field of environmental conservation.
g. Have some awareness of the need for continuous learning to enrich knowledge and applying it, through evaluate, integrate, and apply that knowledge appropriately according to the development of environmental problems.
Curriculum of Environmental Engineering Study Program as follows
Environmental Engineering Study Program is supported by 49 teaching staff from 3 Expert Groups (KK) in FTSL, namely Water & Waste Engineering KK (RALC), Air & Waste Management (PUL), and Environmental Management Technology (TPL), with S3 education qualifications (39 people), S2 (10 people), and 6 of them are professors.
Environmental Engineering Study Program has 5 qualified laboratories, namely Water Quality Laboratory, Water Treatment Engineering Laboratory, Solid and Hazardous Waste Laboratory, Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology Laboratory, and Air Quality Laboratory. Other facilities such as academic administration office, library, internet access, computer room, multimedia room, book store, sport centre, medical centre, canteen, conference hall, student lounge are provided to support the academic activities.
Since 2015, BAN PT as a national accreditation institution has given status A to the ITB Environmental Engineering Study Program. Likewise, since 2013, ABET (http://www.abet.org) has also provided accreditation to ITB Environmental Engineering and carried out re-accredited in 2017.
